Amaterasu is the Goddess of the sun and the universe in Japanese mythology. She is considered a direct ancestor of the Japanese imperial family. The mirror with which she is often depicted is the Imperial House of Japan’s emblem. Amaterasu is celebrated every July 17 with street processions all over the country.
