The World Heritage Convention 1972 underpins the protection and preservation of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List through UNESCO. These sites must be outstanding and highly significant examples of national and cultural heritage.

The World Heritage concept came about through a collaboration between UNESCO and the International Council on Monument and Sites (OCOMOS), who recognised the requirement to develop strategies to protect sites of outstanding natural and cultural value to the world. Sites that are inscribed on the World Heritage List benefit from international cooperation, financial assistance and knowledge-sharing.
