An immortal bird that symbolises virtue and grace, the Chinese Phoenix is a mythical creature often seen on auspicious occasions and events. Historically, it used to signify both male and female elements.
Over time, the phoenix has been increasingly represented as a female bird paired to the male Chinese Dragon, which is the most commonly recognised phoenix today and also presented here.
The appearance of a Chinese Phoenix is said to represent an auspicious new beginning. In this piece, the mythical animal spreads its wings and talons in an impressive display. Minute lines are carefully engraved to deliver a life-like texture to its feathers that feel extraordinary under one’s fingers. Surrounding the legendary creature are intricate motifs of smaller phoenixes that lay against the mandala pattern.
Despite the strong indentations, the Chinese Phoenix remains poised and elegant in the centre. The pattern draws inspiration from the caisson ceilings of the Forbidden City, used only in important Chinese buildings due to its complexity in design and execution. In Feng Shui, the Chinese Phoenix also represents luck, opportunity, and the perfect balance of yin and yang.
At 80mm diameter, this piece is double the size of a regular 2oz collectable coin, giving it an incredible weight and feel. This is made possible with a new minting technique called “Bi-Metal Plus”, which combines 8oz of copper embodied within two layers of 99.9% fine silver totalling 2oz, to deliver a super ultra-high relief topped with silver antiqued finishing.
