A new era in Australian coinage is marked by the introduction of the sixth effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
This 2019 $25 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin features the new effigy by Jody Clark on the obverse, opposite the previous effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley, first used 1998 on its reverse.
The tradition of placing effigies of the reigning monarch on the obverse of coins dates back centuries. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning British monarch in 2015.
Since her 1953 coronation, there have been six different effigies of the Queen on Australian coins. The previous effigies were designed by Mary Gill ick (1953), Arnold Machin (1966), Raphael Maklouf (1985), Ian Rank-Broadley (1998) and Vladimir Gottwald (2000). The sixth and most recent effigy, is based on a drawing by UK designer Jody Clark.
The Clark effigy depicts Her Majesty facing to the right as per tradition. She is shown wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem, which she wore for her coronation.
