About This Coin
In 1851, the discovery of gold at Ophir by Edward Hargraves marked the beginning of Australia’s first official gold rush. This event sparked a surge of migration, as thousands of people arrived in Australia in search of fortune. The gold rush drove rapid population growth, infrastructure development, and significant social change, playing a vital role in shaping the nation’s multicultural identity and economic foundations.
24-carat gilding
At its centre is a map of Australia, featuring a marked point at Ophir to highlight the birthplace of the gold rush, alongside the inscription “175” to denote the anniversary. Behind the map, a crossed shovel and pickaxe—widely recognised symbols of the gold rush—form a striking motif.
Surrounding these central elements are detailed depictions of life on the goldfields, including a lantern, pitched tent, wheelbarrow filled with alluvium, a figure panning for gold, a bucket, and a cradle box set against rugged terrain. The outer rim, along with the map, shovel, and pickaxe, are enhanced with 24-carat gold gilding, reinforcing the theme and adding visual distinction.
