About This Coin
In 1851, Edward Hargraves discovered gold at Ophir in New South Wales, sparking Australia's first official gold rush. This landmark event brought thousands seeking fortune, driving migration, infrastructure expansion, and social change that shaped the nation's multicultural identity and economic foundations.
First gold rush design
The design features a map of Australia with Ophir marked by a dot—the birthplace of the nation's first gold rush. The '175' inscription marks this significant anniversary. Crossed shovel and pickaxe behind the map symbolise Australia's gold rush heritage. The design captures iconic gold panning elements: a lantern, pitched tent, wheelbarrow filled with alluvium, a hand panning for gold, bucket, and cradle box set on rugged terrain. The inscription "AUSTRALIA'S FIRST GOLD RUSH" surrounds the design with a stylised border, 2026 year-date, and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark.
