About This Coin
Australian women's auxiliary services were established in 1941, starting with the WAAAF in March. By war's end, almost 27,000 women had served in various roles from telegraphists to mechanics and radar operators. The WRANS formed in April 1941, and the AWAS in August, ultimately enlisting 24,000 women. The AWAS was the only non-medical service to deploy overseas, serving in New Guinea.
Though disbanded post-war, these services were reconstituted in the 1950s and eventually integrated fully into the three services.
This 2026 20c Coloured Uncirculated Coin commemorates this significant milestone in Australian military history.
