About This Coin
Launched in December 1940, the Allied assault on Italian positions in Libya marked the first major ground offensive for Australian troops in WWII. In early 1941, Allied forces captured Bardia, Tobruk and Benghazi. Australian troops were besieged at Tobruk from April to October in a successful defence. Allied forces also invaded Lebanon in June 1941 to prevent Nazi occupation, with Australian troops playing a key role.
These 1941 campaigns successfully denied the Middle East to Germany and Italy, securing Allied access to vital oil reserves.
This 2026 20c Coloured Uncirculated Coin commemorates these eventful campaigns of 1941.
