About This Coin
In October 1940, Fascist Italy invaded Greece, followed by Nazi Germany's assault from Bulgaria in April 1941. Australian Imperial Force troops, including the 6th Division, were deployed but forced to withdraw to Crete after suffering defeats.
The Germans captured key airfields and the Allies evacuated, resulting in 1,600 Australians killed or wounded and over 5,000 taken prisoner. Greek and Cretan forces fought alongside Commonwealth troops, forging bonds that endured when many emigrated to Australia after the war.
This 2026 20c Coloured Uncirculated Coin commemorates this arduous chapter of Australian involvement in the Second World War.
