Celebrating the Year of the Tiger, the Royal Australian Mint has released this 2022 $5 Fine Silver Proof Domed Coin.
Lunar New Year is celebrated throughout the world, and coins are considered to be a traditional gift. Featuring the proud and charming Tiger and the Lunar calendar wheel, this coin is an auspicious gift or collectable.
The Tiger is the third sign in the Chinese Zodiac. According to legend, the order of the animals in the Zodiac was determined by a Great Race, in which the Jade Emperor urged the animals to cross a swift river. The confident Tiger was a likely contender to win, but kept getting swept downstream by the strong currents. Showing the determination and strength synonymous with those born under the sign, the Tiger finally made it a shore after the Rat and the Ox.
The design features the Tiger standing on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by pine branches that represent the strength the original 'Charmer'. The obverse bears the Lunar calendar wheel, rotated so that the Tiger is show at the top, along with the Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
