The poem In Flanders Fields was written by the Canadian poet, physician and soldier, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae (1872-1918) in May 1915.
It was first published by Punch magazine in Britain in December 1915 and within months it had become an enduring tribute to the sacrifices made by those fighting in the First World War.
Today In Flanders Fields is recited at memorial services commemorating the First World War, such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. The first verse is one of the most popular and is often featured on tombstones and memorials.
