Ghengis Khan's Mongol army was the dominant military force of the 13th century. Never very large, it was still effective and terrifying – fake withdrawals, surprise attacks, hostage-taking, psychological warfare and human shields were classic Mongol moves.
Skilled horsemen and masters of the composite bow, and curved sabres, they could fire up to six arrows a minute and utilized several arrow and arrowhead designs. Light and heavy armour gave protection against attack, while allowing the flexibility required to handle their bows.
