The Trans-Australian Railway opened on 22 October 1917 after five years of arduous construction work across the Nullabor desert.
The railway ran between Port Augusta in South Australia and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and provided nation-building infrastructure.
The railway linked the east and western coasts of Australia, but also provided the platform for successful negotiations to encourage Western Australia to join the Commonwealth of Australia and establish the Australian Federation.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the uncirculated aluminium bronze coin is housed in a beautifully designed card featuring photographic images of the railway. The card includes a circular window revealing the coin’s reverse and obverse designs.
The design on this uncirculated $1 coin portrays a representation of a train used on the Trans-Australian Railway. The inscription 100th ANNIVERSARY 1917 – 2017 is included in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2017 year-date.
Affixed to the envelope are two official Australia Post $1.00 stamps. The stamps are postmarked for the first day of issue and the envelope includes Australia Post’s Seal of Authenticity.
