Although the bear’s fur looks white, each hair shaft is actually pigment-free and transparent with a hollow core that scatters and reflects visible light, much like what happens with ice and snow.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 1/2oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the 2017 Polar Babies – Polar Bear 1/2oz Silver Proof Coin.
The coin’s reverse features a polar bear cub in the snow. The inscription POLAR BEAR, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, also appear in the design. The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date, and the monetary denomination.
Displayed in a classic presentation case, the coin is delivered in a delightful coloured shipper with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
