In ancient Greek mythology, Hades was worshipped as the God of the Underworld and the ruler of the dead. In addition to the underworld, he ruled over all things beneath the earth. For this reason he was also known as the God of Wealth as he presided over all the precious metals still underground.
The design features Hades standing at the bottom of a staircase in the underworld with two skulls in the background. He is holding Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog, by a chain. The inscription HADES also appears in the design.
To capture the depth and detail of the design, the coin is struck in high relief to a rimless format. It has also been individually ‘antiqued’ to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. As a result of this treatment, the appearance of each coin may vary.
The coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.9% pure silver. Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of the Cook Islands, the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date and the monetary denomination are shown on the coin’s obverse.
The coin is housed in a classic black display case within an illustrated shipper. Each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
