The ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Series features a trio of commemorative coins, with symbolic images and themes that represent Australia’s involvement on the Western Front and in the Middle East.
Most of the fighting during World War I took place on the Western Front, the name given to a series of opposing lines of trenches that stretched 750 kilometres from the Belgian coast through France, and all the way to the Swiss border. However, equally as important was the Middle East Campaign fought by the allies against the Turkish Empire, in particular, the Palestine Campaign of 1917 which took place in the towns of Gaza and Beersheba.
The 2017 commemorative set includes three historic World War I designs. The first coin, The Grim Path Back, depicts five Australian members of a field artillery brigade passing along a duckboard track in the remains of Chateau Wood during the Third Battle of Ypres.
The second coin, aptly named Speed and Suprise, shows a soldier from the 4th Light Horse Brigade with his horse against a backdrop of an explosion.
The third coin, Front Line Angels, features a representation of a nurse holding a soldier’s hand as he lies on a stretcher. In her other hand she is holding a lantern which is lit with golden light.
The three-coin set is presented in a round plastic tray which fits inside a beautifully illustrated shipper featuring World War I photography. A booklet containing information and imagery from the Great War is also included.
