A decade after its release, the Kangaroo at Sunset design continues to be the Royal Australian Mint’s most internationally recognised coin with immediate mintage sell-outs each year.
Available via a ballot process and following success in previous years, it is expected that this release will be popular amongst numismatists worldwide.
The first Kangaroo at Sunset gold proof coin was released in November 2006. Multiple award winning coin sculptor Wojciech Pietranik’s inspired design featured a lone kangaroo bounding across the vast Australian outback, its silhouette casting a lengthening shadow in the setting sun. It was a breathtakingly simple, yet hauntingly beautiful design that resonated with coin collectors around the world.
The Kangaroo at Sunset design rapidly became a highly sought-after Royal Australian Mint signature product. Demand was so high that a ballot system for coin collectors and dealers was introduced in 2009 to ensure a more even spread of the mintage among buyers. A silver proof version was released in 2010.
This design remains the Mint’s ‘jewel in the crown’, particularly the gold proof version, where applications to purchase the coin each year far exceed mintage.
The Royal Australian Mint will release no more than 1,000 of the 2017 $25 Kangaroo At Sunset Gold Proof Coin.
