In 2016, The Perth Mint’s internationally renowned Australian Lunar Silver Proof Coin Series II celebrates the Year of the Monkey, the eighth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.
The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar monkey include 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 and 2016.
Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be intelligent, quick-witted, optimistic, ambitious, and adventurous.
Meticulously struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, no more than 10,000 of the 2016 Year of the Monkey 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Coin will be issued by The Perth Mint. Each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The reverse of each coin depicts an adult monkey and a baby monkey sitting in a peach tree. The baby is holding a peach, which is symbolic of longevity and immortality. The Chinese character for ‘monkey’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Monkey’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2016 year-date, and the monetary denomination are shown on the coin’s obverse.
Accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, both coins are housed in a red and black display case with illustrated shipper.
