The Great Migrations – Monarch Butterfly 1oz Silver Coin features in this exciting collection which celebrates one of nature's most impressive wonders, when millions of animals start their great annual migration, covering vast distances in search for food, mating partners or shelter.
Each year, in September-October, thousands of Monarch butterflies migrate from North America's colder regions to warmer climates in California and Mexico, to hibernate on tree branches and trunks. This trip, called "one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world", spans to about 2,000 miles each way, each leg taking up to two months to complete.
One of very few insects to migrate, it is believed that Monarchs use the position of the sun to tell them when to migrate and the Earth's magnetic field for navigation.
The coin reverse shows an engraved illustration of a flutter of Monarch butterflies, covering tree branches, ready to hibernate. This stunning coin comes in a compact printed rectangular coin case, which incorporates an impressive, printed scene of this great migration. The uniquely numbered Certificate of Authenticity is included in the packaging.
The New Zealand Mint will release no more than 3,000 of the 2016 Great Migrations Monarch Butterfly 1oz Silver Proof Coin.
