A round silver 50 cent piece featuring a kangaroo and an emu; three copper-nickel coins, the 20, 10, and 5 cent, featuring a platypus, a lyrebird, and an echidna, respectively; and two bronze coins, the 2 cent featuring a frilled neck lizard, and a 1 cent featuring a feathertail glider.

The Perth Mint was instrumental in the production of much of the low-denomination coinage for Australia’s conversion to decimal currency in February 1966, including the 1 and 2 cent coins. In the year prior to the launch of the new coinage, The Perth Mint struck nearly 105 million 1 cent and 2 cent coins.

These commemorative coins are struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. No more than 2,000 of the 50th Anniversary of Australian Decimal Currency 2016 1oz Silver Proof Two-Coin Set will be released by The Perth Mint.

The reverse of the replica 2 cent coin features the frilled neck lizard design from the original 2 cent coin introduced in 1966. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also appears in the design. The reverse of the replica 1 cent coin features the feathertail glider design from the original 1 cent coin introduced in 1966. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also appears in the design.

The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, the coin’s weight and fineness, and the 2016 year-date are shown on each coin’s obverse.

The coins are housed in a classic display case. Also inside the case is a pouch, containing an original 1 cent and 2 cent coin. The case is packaged within a beautifully illustrated shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
