Originally published in 1916, May Gibbs’ Gumnut Babies went on to become a much-loved Australian children’s classic.
Her creation of a fantasy world within the Australian bush, using creatures and images that were well-recognised and found right across the country, has fascinated generations of Australians for decades.
Creating characters out of gumnuts, banksias, flowers, and other Australian flora and fauna, Gibbs captured the imagination of children and adults alike, employing humour to appeal to all ages. Her accompanying illustrations reflected the beauty and uniqueness of the bush, bringing her stories to life.
The Perth Mint and Australia Post are pleased to celebrate this 100th anniversary with a stunning Stamp and Coin Cover.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the uncirculated aluminium bronze coin is housed in a beautifully designed card with a circular window revealing the coin’s reverse and obverse designs.
The coin's reverse depicts two adorable Gumnut Babies sitting amongst native flowers. The design includes the inscription MAY GIBBS GUMNUT BABIES 100TH ANNIVERSARY, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2016 year-date, and the monetary denomination are depicted on the coin’s obverse.
Affixed to the envelope is an official Australia Post $1 stamp. The stamp is postmarked for the first day of issue and the envelope includes Australia Post’s Seal of Authenticity.
