In 2015, the Royal Australian Mint celebrates 50 years of creating coins that Australians spend, save and collect on a daily basis.
On this golden anniversary it is only fitting that our signature designs are captured in gold, to be cherished as gifts and collectors’ items.
Shipping to commence from 4th May 2015.
On 22 February 1965, the Royal Australian Mint was officially opened by His Royal Highness Prince Philip. This heralded a new era for Australian currency. As the first wholly Australian-owned mint, it was dedicated to producing coins for the changeover to decimal currency, and creating a suite of new coins with designs that reflected a truly Australian identity.
The new coins depicted Australian wildlife and were designed by Stuart Devlin. Despite many changes in minting technology and social trends, these designs have endured as iconic symbols of Australian culture. They were joined in 1984 by Devlin’s design of five kangaroos for the one dollar coin, and in 1988 by Horst Hahne’s depiction of an Indigenous elder for the two dollar coin.
Over the last half-century, the Mint has also celebrated the significance of coins with many commemorative and collectable products.
The Royal Australian Mint will release no more than 100 of the 2015 Gold Proof Year Set.
