In 2015, the Royal Australian Mint celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of creating coins that Australians have spent, saved and collected.
On 22 February 1965, the Royal Australian Mint was officially opened by His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, becoming the sole producer of Australia’s circulating coins, with designs reflecting the distinct Australian identity.
These iconic coins depicting Australian wildlife were designed by Stuart Devlin. Despite changes in minting technology and social trends, these designs have remained enduring symbols of Australian culture. They were joined in 1984 by the one dollar coin and in 1988 by the two dollar coin, designed by Horst Hahne.
Over the last half-century, the Mint has shared the significance of coins through many commemorative and collectable products. The pinnacle of these are proof coins, which are intricately designed, struck and inspected to create splendid pieces for discerning collectors.
The Royal Australian Mint will release no more than 50 of each individual 2015 Gold Proof Circulating Coin Designs.
