In April 1915, just eight months after Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914, soldiers from Australia and New Zealand – organised into the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) – landed on the Gallipoli peninsula, with the aim of assisting in the allied effort to command the Dardanelles and to knock Ottoman Turkey out of the war.
They fought long and hard alongside the British and French troops. Eventually realising the campaign was futile, British command ordered the evacuation of allied forces, and Australian and New Zealand soldiers departed in December 1915.
The 2015 ANZAC Coin and Stamp Set comprises of two 1/2oz proof coins, an Australia Post official stamp, and a New Zealand Post official stamp. Each coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1/2oz of 99.9% pure silver, and issued as legal tender under the currency act of each country.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 2,500 of the 2015 ANZAC 1/2oz Silver Coin and Stamp Set.
The reverse of the Australian coin and stamp depicts the silhouettes of an Australian and a New Zealand soldier against the rugged hills of the Gallipoli peninsula at Anzac Cove in colour. It also features sprigs of Golden Wattle, monetary denomination and the words ‘ANZAC’ and ‘Australia’.
The reverse of the New Zealand coin and stamp depicts the silhouettes of an Australian and a New Zealand soldier against the beach at Anzac Cove in colour. It also features fronds of Silver Fern, monetary denomination and the words ‘ANZAC’ and ‘New Zealand’.
