The Royal Australian Mint’s 50th birthday marks a half century of Australia’s own mint creating minted treasures.
There coins have been used, saved, spent and collected by people of all ages throughout the country, with everyone having their own special coin-related memories.
This exciting 50th anniversary design features a special World Money Fair 2015 overprint.
Since 1965, the Royal Australian Mint has been producing the coins that Australians have used in their everyday lives. These coins have meant different things to many different people. Whether they have been used as items for day-to-day spending, treasured as pieces of art, admired for the history and culture celebrated on them or arousing nostalgic memories, they have had an unwavering presence for everybody in the country.
As the first wholly Australian-operated mint, its primary function was to produce the coins to be used after Australia’s changeover to decimal currency. Half a century later, these circulating coins are still adorned with iconic Australian images, showing the nation’s great pride in its people and unique fauna.
Throughout the years, many commemorative and collectable coins have celebrated important aspects of Australian history, culture and society.
The Royal Australian Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the 2015 50c Berlin World Money Fair Colour Unc Coin.
