As news of the war broke in London, the Australia was committed to supporting Britain and its allies, and volunteering began for the Australian Imperial Force.

A huge wave of patriotism and support for ‘King and Country’ swept across Australia. Major political parties, churches, community leaders and newspapers exhorted its citizens to champion the war. There was a rush to recruiting offices, and at first only the fittest and finest men were accepted.

As time passed, the long lists of Australian casualties increased, and the grim reality of war set in. In the hope of encouraging more men to enlist, a series of posters were used to invigorate enlistment.

One such example was the ‘A Call from the Dardanelles’ poster which employed the theme of Australians fighting at Gallipoli. The poster featured a WWI digger in a slouch hat and a rising sun badge standing astride the Narrows, one foot on the Gallipoli Peninsula and the other on Asia Minor, calling out the Australian bush cry of ‘coo-ee’.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the Australian Posters of World War I – Enlistment Coin. Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The rectangular coin’s reverse features a coloured representation of the Australia World War I poster ‘A Call from the Dardanelles’, headed by the inscription AUSTRALIAN ENLISTMENT. The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight and fineness also appear in the design.

The coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year-date and the monetary denomination.

This coin is housed in a stylish latex case that displays the coin’s reverse and obverse. It is presented in a themed shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
