The fifth, and final, release in the Australian Megafauna series features the Megalania, a giant extinct goanna or monitor lizard which was part of a range of megafaunal creatures that inhabited Australia during the Pleistocene period.
The Australian Megafauna coin series goes back in time to discover the larger-than-life animals that once roamed Australia.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 6,500 of the 2014 Australian Megafauna – Megalania 1oz Silver Proof Coin.
The coin’s reverse depicts a Megalania set against a coloured background. The inscription MEGALANIA, the coin’s weight and purity, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark are also incorporated into the design. The coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year-date and the monetary denomination.
This coin is housed in The Perth Mint’s grey presentation case with a themed shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
