Educated at Sydney Grammar School, Paterson went on to become an articled clerk and was admitted to the bar as a solicitor in 1886, practising law for approximately a decade afterwards.

Paterson first began writing verses as a student, adopting the moniker 'The Banjo' which was taken from the name of a family racehorse. By 1895, Paterson’s ballads were so popular that Angus and Robertson published his collection, The Man From Snowy River and Other Verses. The first edition sold out and established the character of ‘the bushman’ as a romantic archetype in the national consciousness.

Aside from his poetry, Paterson served as a war correspondent in the South African War in 1899/1900, travelling to China and England in the subsequent years. During World War I, he served as an ambulance driver, returning to Australia in 1915. He then served in the Middle East. Despite being wounded in 1916, he continued to serve until 1919.

After the war, Paterson resumed his journalistic career. He was by now a famed figure as his poems had been reprinted many times over. The poet retired from active journalism in 1930 to devote his time to his many creative writing projects, earning a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1939.

Paterson died, after a short illness, on 5 February 1941.
