The koala is one of the most beloved animals in Australia. The Perth Mint is pleased to issue a coloured koala coin in card, struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver.
As a native marsupial, the koala displays features and behaviours which ensure its survival in the extreme conditions of the Australian outback.
Well suited to a life in the trees, koalas possess a pear-shaped body and a good sense of balance, thick fur for protection, and clawed paws for gripping and climbing. The female koala also has a pouch in which to carry and nurture its young, until the cub is able to cling to its mother’s back.
Koalas take refuge from the heat of the day and maintain their diet of grazing on gum leaves by living in eucalypt forests. Although they live in societies, individual koalas are territorial of their home range of trees, which provide them with food, shelter and places for social contact.
This coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has an unlimited mintage.
The coin's reverse depicts a close up coloured image of an adult koala with a spray of gum leaves. The design includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KOALA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2014 year-date. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and monetary denomination are depicted on the coin’s obverse.
This coin is presented in an illustrated card, showing the coin’s reverse and obverse, and technical specifications.
