2014 marked 100 years since the departure of the convoy of ships which carried the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF), who would later become known as the ‘Anzacs’, from King Georges Sound at Albany.
At this time the leader of the opposition party, Andrew Fisher, stated during his election campaign that Australians will stand beside our own and help and defend her to our last man and our last shilling.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1/4oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. No more than 1,000 of The ANZAC Spirit 2014 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin will be released by The Perth Mint.
The coin's reverse features soldiers marching along the Albany coastline, with a convoy of ships in King Georges Sound in the background. The inscription ‘1914 – To Our Last Man and Our Last Shilling’, a red poppy motif and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark are also incorporated into the design.
The coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year-date, the monetary denomination, and the coin’s weight and fineness. Each coin will be presented in a black and red themed display case featuring the words ‘PRIDE’, ‘RESPECT’, and ‘GRATITUDE’ on the outside of the case, within a themed shipper.
