2013 Queen Victoria Coronation Anniversary 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Victoria was born on 24 May 1819 in London, and lived a sheltered childhood with her mother and German governess. Her own father, Edward, the Duke of Kent had died when she was a baby. On the death of her uncle, William IV, Victoria was the only legitimate heir and therefore first in the line of succession.

In 1838, at the age of eighteen, Victoria ascended the throne relying heavily on the guidance of the then Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. Her marriage to Prince Albert in 1840 gave her further support, resulting in a happy marriage, which produced nine children.

Queen Victoria reigned until her death on 22 January 1901 at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. She was buried at Windsor beside Prince Albert in the Frogmore Royal Mausoleum. Above the Mausoleum door are inscribed Victoria's words, “Farewell best beloved, here at last I shall rest with thee, with thee in Christ I shall rise again”.

As the longest reigning British Monarch and the figurehead of a vast Empire, Queen Victoria saw unprecedented social and technological change. Railways and steamships revolutionised communication, trade and travel. Population growth exploded, medicine improved and widespread industrialisation radically altered the way people lived.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 1oz Silver Proof Coins to commemorate this anniversary.

The silver coin’s reverse depicts a coloured Coronation image of Queen Victoria from the Royal Collection painting of 1840, by Sir George Hayter. An image of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Crown, the inscription QUEEN VICTORIA 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF CORONATION and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark are also included in the design.

The obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the year-date and monetary denomination.

The silver coin is housed in a display case with illustrated shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
