The stunning Discover Australia silver proof coin series features five new designs for 2013.
The Koala is a unique Australian marsupial recognised by its bear-like face and thick grey fur. This tree dwelling creature is believed to get its name from the Indigenous words, meaning ‘no drink’.
This is because the koala sources its hydration from a specific variety of eucalyptus leaves and is only seen to drink in drought situations or when ill. This marvellous marsupial is found in a range of habitats, from coastal islands and tall eucalypt forests to inland woodlands.
The coin's reverse depicts an adult koala on a eucalyptus tree stump against a coloured forest scene and picturesque sunset. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and KOALA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2013 year-date are also included in the design.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of each 2013 Discover Australia 1oz silver proof coin, with an issue limit of 3,500 for each individual coin and 1,500 for the five-coin set.
