DISCOVER ALL THE OUTBACK HAS TO OFFER.
The stunning Discover Australia five coin proof set includes all five new designs for 2013. The Kangaroo, Koala, Emu, Kookaburra and Platypus all feature on 1oz silver proof coins.
The Kangaroo belongs to the super family, Macropodoidea, meaning ‘great footed’. This iconic creature’s strong hind legs and long tail are brilliantly designed to hop great distances.
The Koala is a unique Australian marsupial recognised by its bear-like face and thick grey fur. This tree dwelling creature is believed to get its name from the Indigenous words, meaning ‘no drink’.
The Emu is a large flightless bird recognised by its long neck, brown drooping feathers, pointed beak and large bright eyes. Generally nomadic, the emu is capable of running at great speeds over long distances, with a distinct bouncing motion.
The Kookaburra is the world's largest kingfisher. It is recognised by its plumage in shades of white and brown, which is perfectly designed for the Australian environment. Known for its famous laughing call, the main purpose of the kookaburra’s cry is to communicate with other birds to inform them of its territory.
The Platypus is a mammal and monotreme recognised by its soft rubbery bill, thick insulating fur coat, and webbed feet. One of the most unusual creatures on earth, the platypus is egg-laying. After the incubation and hatching of the eggs, the mother platypus produces milk from large glands under her skin which oozes onto her fur, allowing the young to suckle.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of each 2013 Discover Australia 1oz silver proof coin, with an issue limit of 3,500 for each individual coin and 1,500 for the five-coin set.
